Blood Orange Margarita | Something New For Dinner

There is a little story behind this gorgeous blood orange margarita. A couple years ago I gathered a small group of friends together and we worked all night trying to come up with the perfect margarita. You can just imagine how exhausting that was! We played with the type of tequila, whether or not it was sweetened, whether or not to add Cointreau, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier, the ratio of tequila to citrus, the type of citrus, rocks or neat and whether or not to salt the glass. As you can imagine it was a long, but very fun evening. The next morning? Not so much!

The end result was we discovered there is no perfect margarita for everyone. The perfect margarita is very personal. What I did learn was my perfect margarita, which uses a combination of fresh lime and orange juice. In fact, virtually all ten of my margarita experimenters agreed that a little fresh OJ really smoothes out a margarita. Even those that like a really bracing tequila forward margarita enjoyed a splash of OJ in their margarita.

So with OJ on my brain and Cinco de Mayo around the corner, I developed this blood orange margarita. I like working with blood oranges in a margarita for two reasons: 1) Blood oranges are gorgeous. Their red, orange and pink color make me happy. In fact, they match some beautiful napkins my daughter made for me. And that makes me happy. 2) Blood oranges are tarter than regular fresh orange juice, which works to keep the margarita not too sweet, but still refreshing. Blood oranges are in season from about December to May, so don't delay. The time to make this blood orange margarita is now!

I add two unusual ingredients to this blood orange margarita. I add St. Germain liquor instead of Cointreau, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier. I like the combo of flavors and because St. Germain is sweet, you don't need any additional sweetener. Additionally I rim my blood orange margarita in a mixture of Trader Joe's Chile Lime seasoning and brown sugar. If you are a fan of Tajin seasoning, I think you will LOVE Trader Joe's version. To me it is brighter and cleaner tasting. The combination of TJ's Chile lime seasoning and brown sugar gives the drink just the right sweet, salty and spicy kick. And no Trader Joe's did not pay me to say this! You can purchase it at TJ's for $1.99 or online at Amazon for a bit more.

I hope you enjoy this blood orange margarita to kick off the summer season beginning with Cinco de Mayo. Happy summer!
