What happens when Mikey makes lasagna
This summer my son Mikey came home from college for a couple days before he took off on a week-long hiking trip in the Sierras with his buddy Austin. One of the biggest challenges they faced was how to pack enough food to sustain them on their 100+ mile hike. If you saw how much they eat when they are not hiking you would understand this was no small problem. After giving it some thought and consulting Backpack Gourmet, they decided to make lasagna and dehydrate it.
The cooking supplies
Of course they needed lasagna noodles, some meat, various cheeses and some store bought spaghetti sauce. But there were some other essential ingredients to help them through the process: beer, cherries and peanut M&M's. Actually the peanut M& M's were meant for the hike, but the guys worked up a pretty big hunger cooking and had to tap into their stash a little earlier than planned.

A team effort
The boys learned a lot in the process: a clove of garlic is not a whole head, and it is advisable to remove the paper off the garlic cloves before you chop them.
Two beautiful lasagnas
They did a great job.
Pretty proud of themselves
And were proud of the results.
The taste test
But it all comes down to the taste test.
Might have to try a second piece to be sure
It was delicious!
Now what about the dishes?
Who us?
Hey, save some for the hike!
If this post put you in the mood for lasagna, check out my mom's recipe here.
I love the way you have added the personal experiences to your site. As always I love the recipes and since I don’t usually make homemade sauce, am going to try the lasagna sauce you posted!
Thank you Kate. Please let me know how it turns out.
