Black cod
Black cod, also known as Butter fish or Sable fish, is a healthy sustainable and delicious fish choice. Black cod is very high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Black cod have a sweet, buttery flavor and texture similar to over-fished Chilean sea bass.
Sustainability
Lucky for us, black cod are one of the most sustainable fish in the U. S. Native to the Pacific North, particularly British Columbia and Alaskan waters, Black cod from Alaskan and Canadian waters are usually long-lined to depths of over 5,000 feet. Rated "Best Choice" by the Marine Stewardship Council, for their sustainability and ecologically sound fishing methods. By comparison, black cod from Washington, Oregon and California are typically fished with bottom trawls that have a higher percentage of by-catch and cause greater damage to the under-water environment and thus a lower rating of "Good alternative."
