The Great Macadamia Nut Give Away
Growing up in Hawaii, I began a lifelong love of macadamia nuts at an early age. Really what is better than these crunchy, buttery tree nuts? As much as I love them, I grew up thinking macadamia nuts were a tasty, but calorie-dense splurge. But then again, I thought the same thing about avocados, olives, whole milk and really any kind of nuts. Fortunately the latest research is turning long-held nutritional beliefs on their ear and many foods we once thought were bad for us are suddenly looking pretty darned good from a health standpoint.
In the case of macadamia nuts, they are rich in protein, fiber, phytochemicals, minerals and vitamins and have a super low glycemic index of 10 (55 or less is considered low). They are cholesterol free, and are comprised of 80% monounsaturated fat, which has been shown to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol). Studies are ongoing, but some suggest macadamia nuts may promote heart and brain health, fight insulin resistance, limit oxidative stress and even promote weight loss.
As a die-hard mac nut lover, I was thrilled when I was recently asked to do some recipe development, photography and create a series of videos for Royal Hawaiian Orchards, a Hawaiian company that has been growing macadamia nuts since 1948. We had a great time working with Royal Hawaiian Orchards. We love their products and want to share them with our readers.
