Strawberries, sour cream and brown sugar - awesomely simple

Some food combinations are so simple they don't rise to the level of a recipe.  This is one of those combos. I don't want you to go through life missing out on this great combination so I am publishing this awesomely simple dessert recipe.

Favorite dessert from my childhood

This combo was the hands down favorite dessert from my childhood. It was the dessert where there were never leftovers, and everyone didn't take their eyes off the dishes until everything was gone. That is, everyone except my sister Becky. She was convinced she didn't like sour cream so she passed on this dessert for years. Meanwhile, the rest of us competed for every morsel.

Years went by and one day Becky decided to give strawberries, sour cream and brown sugar a go. She dunked her first strawberry in the sour cream and then in the brown sugar and popped it in her mouth. Her eyes got big as she proclaimed, "I am so mad at myself. This is delicious and I have been missing out all these years!"

It confirmed what my mom had instilled in us - to always taste a dish before you make up your mind. This is a lesson I came by naturally.

Dip and dunk or mix it up

We ate this combo very simply. My mom put out a big bowl of strawberries with their leaves still on, a bowl of sour cream and a bowl of brown sugar. You pick up the strawberry holding on to the green leaves, dip it in the sour cream, then in the brown sugar and pop it in your mouth. You can get fancy and slice the strawberries, or mix the sour cream and brown sugar together and spoon it over the strawberries, or even serve it over angel food cake, but I like the simple dunking method best.

Gluten-free

This dessert is gluten-free.

Health benefits of eating strawberries

Did you know strawberries are really good for you? In fact, when you eat strawberries and sugar at the same time, strawberries reduce the glycemic surge you get from eating sugar.
